How can you identify a bleed?

Joint bleed Early symptoms of a joint bleed include:   

  1. Pain in the joint 
  2. Tingling in the joint
  3. Difficulty using a joint 
  4. Warmth in the joint area 

NB: there is no visible bruising or skin discolouration
with a joint bleed.

Muscle bleed Symptoms of a muscle bleed include:    

  1. Difficulty moving an arm or leg 
  2. Pain 
  3. Difficulty using an arm or leg
  4. Warmth in the muscle 
  5. When touched, the muscle feels tense or tight even though it is at rest 
  6. Numbness or tingling (seek assessment if there is a lot of numbness) 
  7. Veins appear larger than normal 
  8. In severe cases, skin may change colour or go blue

If you experience any of the above symptoms, it is important that you stop taking part in sport immediately. Apply the PRICE regimen (Protection Rest Ice Compress Elevate your joint or muscle) and give yourself an infusion of factor replacement therapy as soon as possible.
